How a Restoration Company Can Help with Water, Fire, and Mold Damage to Carpet

Monday, September 6th, 2010
Water damage to carpet will be inevitable for many people. With the amount of pipes that burst during winter seasons, or just faulty water pipes in general, homes and businesses can be affected with massive amounts of damage. There is also fire damage that can happen if a home or a business catches on fire. When water is left in carpet for a long period of time, mold can start to set in, and a home can be a dangerous and toxic place to be in. Most water damaged carpets in small areas can be taken care of with a water filtration vacuum cleaner, but if a person’s entire house is damaged, or if a business has many floors of water damaged carpet, they are going to need a better recourse. Restoration companies were created to help homes and businesses save their property from massive amounts of water, fire, flood, and mold damage to carpet.

Restoration companies can bring carpets back from the brink by returning carpets back to their original conditions. Most restoration companies are equipped to help homes and businesses that have been affected by natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, rainstorms, mudslides, monsoons, and windstorms, as well as burst pipes, sewer damage, fires, and explosions. No job is too big for most restoration companies. The areas of a home or business that a restoration company can work with are, fire damage, burned walls, clean up, restore, recover, redesign, and reconstruction. Restoration companies have the most state of the art equipment that can perform a dry down of a home or business when water damage has occurred. Their equipment can extract water from any carpet and floor boards underneath. Then, they will use a combination of demolitions, drying equipment, and air movers to further the restoration process. They are also equipped with infra red cameras that can find water damage that is unseen by most people. Once a home or business has been dried down, the recovery stage can take place. This is where the carpet will be restored, redesigned, and reconstructed.

Once a home or a business has been accessed for damages, a restoration company can have carpet back to new again within a few days time. Getting to the water damaged areas as quick as possible will help to save a home or a business from destruction.

How to protect and prolong the life of tile

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
Decorative tile has become a popular decorating item in many homes. While tile adds to the home’s appeal, it is not without its weakness. Water can extensively damage tile and cause mold to grow in a person’s home.

A common place to find tile in a home is in the bathroom, specifically in a shower. These tiles are most often placed over drywall, as in homes built between 1965 to 1990, or cement walling, as found in newer homes. While tiles make for a sturdy shower space, they remain susceptible to damage from water left after a person bathes.

If a shower has a drywall backing, the remaining water will travel to the drywall, causing it to expand and swell. This expansion then causes the tile to become loose and perhaps even crack. The damage from cracked and loose tiles can be so significant as to warrant a shower’s needing to be entirely replaced. Cement walls do not absorb water; however, the water, instead of being absorbed into the walls, will travel to the showers floor. The water will then seep onto any surrounding floor tiling or carpeting and cause mold. Again, the damage can be so great that the homeowner may need to replace the flooring.

Home restoration professionals commonly recommend that a homeowner using grout to seal the cracks in between tiles to prevent the water from seeping into drywall. Grout is a cement-based product that, while not waterproof, prevents for some time the seeping of water into the drywall. Even more so, a homeowner should use inspect a shower’s grout and routinely replace it to ensure that the tiles will not be damaged. The grout should then be sealed with caulking. For newer showers that have cement walls, it is recommended that a weephole be placed in the shower. A weephole allows the water to travel back into the shower without damaging outside flooring or tiling. A weephole should never be filled with grout or caulk. Without an adequate weephole, a cement-backed tile shower stands to suffer damage to the shower pan and surrounding flooring.

The Cost of Peace of Mind

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Property ownership can be both rewarding and fraught with uncertainty. Costly nuisances such as water, mold, or fire damage can come without warning. The purpose of insurance is to offset the high cost of uncertainty. The keyword here is offset, because peace of mind comes at a cost.

The insured–the party who purchases the insurance–must pay a premium and a deductible to the insurer. The insurer is the company offering the insurance. The premium must be paid regardless of whether there is property damage. The premium is the amount that the insured pays for the option to allocate the risk of property damage to the insurer. The deductible, on the other hand, is the threshold amount that the insured must pay the insurer before the insurer will reach into its coffers to cover the remainder of the expenses associated with the property damage.

For example, if the deductible is $1000 and the property damage totals $5000, then the insured must pay the $1000 before the insurer will pay the remaining $4000. The same is true if the damage is $20,000 with a $1000 deductible. The insured must pay the first $1000 before the insurance company will pay the remaining $19,000.

It is possible to have a deductible of zero; however, the price of a low deductible is generally a high premium. The reverse is also true; the price of a low premium is a high deductible.

The choice between a high deductible or a high premium generally hinges on risk. For instance, a person who lives in a floodplain or a place known for its fires may choose to pay a higher premium in exchange for a lower deductible. Where risk is difficult to predict, the choice will boil down to what you can afford.

Either way, it is difficult not to choose the security of insurance.

Call One Company if You Have an Emergency

Friday, August 27th, 2010
People do not like to think that emergencies can happen to them, but ignoring the possibility does not prevent them from occurring. It is always best to be prepared and know what to do if you should find it necessary to deal with an unpleasant situation. When you have a plan in mind, it is easier to remain calm and reassure your family if you are faced with a disaster.

If fire, water or mold causes damage to your home, it may not be safe to live there until you get the damage repaired, so you will want restoration to begin as soon as possible. It is wise to have an arrangement with a reputable company in place, so that if an emergency occurs, one quick phone call will get the process started immediately. Large loss response capabilities allow a customer to call one company for large and small emergencies. An emergency is always traumatic, but a dependable restoration company can help you to get back in your home in a reasonable time, so the disruption of your family’s lives will not need to be any longer than necessary.

When you deal with experienced restoration experts, you can have the assurance of knowing that they will handle your valuable possessions with the utmost care and get your family back in your home as quickly as possible. They will know the correct process to use during the entire procedure so that all details are covered. For instance, if you have water damage, they must dry the area thoroughly to prevent mold from forming, and inspect electronic appliances and equipment to ensure that they are safe to use again.

It is better to be prepared for something that does not happen than for something to happen for which you are not prepared. When you are ready for possible emergencies, you can be stress free and know that you have done the best that you can to take care of your family in any situation. Like the insurance that we hope we will never need, we hope we will not need emergency recovery services, but if we need either, we will be thankful that we took the necessary steps to have them.

Sewer back-up contamination clean-up methods

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010
Sewer back-up contamination is not a pleasant thought but is a reality to many otherwise clean households each year. If this happens to you, what is the best clean-up method to tackle the job inside your house? Sewage is any refuse liquids or waste matters that are usually carried away through a sewage pipe. When these pipes back up, quite often brought on during storms when there is an excess of water flowing into these systems, the sewage can back up and end up inside your house. When this happens, it’s important to know how to clean it up.

First and foremost, it should always be assumed that waste carried through the sewage lines is hazardous as some of it could very well contain human feces and various waste products that could transmit numerous diseases such as intestinal diseases, hepatitis and even asthma disorders, just to name a few.

Since not only disease-transmitting waste backs up into the house, but an abundance of water comes along with it, the danger of mold developing is of utmost concern. Certain types of mold can turn a clean, healthy household environment into one that is uninhabitable as mold can cause serious health problems that can even lead to death.

Because of the health risks involved when sewage backs up into your house, they way it is cleaned up is vitally important. While there are helpful tips on how to clean up using bleach mixtures, which kills disease and mold, do-it-yourself sewage cleanup can be tedious, time-consuming and dangerous for your health. it may be best to consider calling a professional waste removal company who is familiar with proper water removal especially when dealing with issues of potential mold and waste. Some such companies even offer 24 hour assistance, so the sooner they are called, the sooner you can rest easy knowing your house is free of potential harmful disease causing invaders. By leaving the clean up to an experienced company that handles sewage backup removal, you can be assured that your household will once again be a clean, livable place to enjoy.

How to choose the right emergency restoration company (IICRC certification)

Friday, August 13th, 2010

When you’re dealing with damage that has occurred as a result of an emergency situation, such as water, mold or fire damage, it is imperative that you choose the right emergency restoration company. Many people don’t exactly know which steps to take when dealing with such emergencies. However, a good company who knows what they’re talking about will be able to help anyone deal with the situation at hand and get through it as quickly and calmly as possible. Choosing the right emergency restoration company doesn’t have to be difficult, so long as you know what you’re looking for.

Bottom line, the most important factor is that the company be IICRC certified. Without the proper certification, there’s no reason to go any further. A company who is IICRC certified is one who likely knows what they’re talking about, and will be instrumental to helping you navigate your situation. If certification is not in place, don’t even consider hiring the company.

It is important to also take into consideration the reputation of the company. If a company has a good reputation throughout the community, chances are they will be a good choice. If the company’s reputation is poor, you may want to steer clear of them, no matter how low their rates. Many people set their rates based upon their experience, and as the old saying goes, you often get what you pay for.

Choosing the right emergency restoration company is important, and you should take care in doing so as carefully as possible. The more effort you put in, the more streamlined the situation will be.

What is Water Damage Mitigation

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
Anyone who has ever suffered significant water damage to their home knows how frustrating of a situation it can be. Not only is water damage unhealthy to live in/around, it can significantly decrease the resale value of your home. Fortunately, it is possible to remedy the negative effects of water damage through a process known as water damage mitigation.

Put simply, water damage mitigation is the process of repairing whatever damage has been caused by excessive moisture. The process and extent of the job can vary dramatically by circumstance. For instance, a small patch of mold caused by excessive moisture is something that can be mitigated rather easily. However, a crumbling foundation that has suffered years of water damage can be a massive job. In such cases, structures can be in such bad shape that they must be demolished. While these situations are rare, they do exist.

The fact is, living in a home that has even a small amount of water damage can be unsafe, as well as unhealthy. Mold (especially black mold) that is born out of excessive moisture can be very hazardous to one’s health, and can cause respiratory issues if inhaled. While it may seem as if getting rid of a mold problem is something that one can do on their own, this is never recommended. Since professionals work with mold on a regular basis, they know the process inside and out, and are aware of all necessary safety details. Doing the job on your own can sometimes make the problem worse, and can be hazardous to your health.

Water damage mitigation does not have to be expensive, and is a process that should be done as soon as possible, as the more water damage accumulates, the harder and more intensive the mitigation process becomes. Don’t live in a home riddled with moisture issues any longer – choose water damage mitigation today.

Portable Air Conditioning Rental

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010
A portable air conditioning rental is mostly needed after water, mold or fire damage to a home or business. A restoration company that specializes in building restoration and clean-up will be able to offer a portable air conditioning unit for rent until the whole air conditioning is repaired and working properly. While the restoration work is being done, the company will offer a portable air conditioning unit that can be carried from place to place depending on where it is needed. If someone is sitting in their kitchen and it’s hot, they can keep the portable right beside them. When finished in the kitchen, they can easily pick it up and carry it into another room where they can still remain cool.

After the initial restoration work is completed, it still can take a long time for the building to dry. That is why a restoration company should be able to provide temporary climate control including equipment rental to their customers. This not only includes a portable air conditioning unit, but also a heating unit, depending on what time of the year it happens to be, or what part of the country is affected.

There are also companies that specialize in just the portable rentals and necessary temporary equipment needed until the home or business gets back to normal. These companies can come over and see exactly what the problem is, what is needed, and set up the rental process for you.

A restoration company not only cleans up, drys out and repairs any damage caused by many natural or unnatural disasters, but can also provide valuable information on preventative measures to keep this from happening again. They can advise on ways to prevent flooding, stop mold from growing, and to practice safety measures to prevent fires. Just like a doctor will advise someone to quit smoking so they can avoid getting lung cancer, the restoration company can advise customers on ways to stop more damage from happening again.

Of course, there are some things that cannot be helped. There are hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires and other disasters that someone can only do so much to prevent damage. So there is always a need for a restoration company and a portable air conditioning rental unit.

Lead Based Paint Remediation

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Lead based paint remediation is a job for a professional company that is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This certification ensures that the company is knowledgeable and competent in water, mold, and fire restoration when handling lead-based paint. The managers, inspectors, and technicians of a lead-safe certified company take classes and do field work to garner skills and expertise in safely removing and disposing of lead-based paint. The debris from it is hazardous waste.

A new federal law applies as of April 22, 2010. It compels contractors that execute renovation, restoration, and painting projects that unsettles an area bigger than 6 square feet of paint in structures constructed before 1978 to be trained and certified in work habits that stop lead contamination. This law applies to work done in homes, day care facilities, and schools.

Professionals know the correct procedures to lessen, control, and confine lead dust produced by removing lead-based paint. They specialize in water damage repair, mold inspection and elimination, and fire damage renovation.

People usually get lead poisoning from lead contaminated dust or deteriorating lead-based paint. All of the methods for paint removal which includes heat guns, torches, sandpaper, chemicals, and scrapers may generate floating lead dust and fumes. People can inhale or ingest these dangerous contaminates, which cause lead poisoning. This poisoning may cause irreparable brain damage in children. In adults it may cause nerve damage, decrease muscle coordination, and raise blood pressure.

But trained professionals working for a water, mold, and fire restoration company know how to control the lead dust that is stirred up during the elimination or abatement process. The strict procedures they follow prevents the lead dust from contaminating your home, day car facility or school.

The professionals can remove window sills, molding, and trim to strip the paint outdoors. The restoration company can remove and change or cover-up lead-based paint. They can restore your home to a lead paint free condition that is safe for your family.

Mold in HVAC Ductwork

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The presence of mold in a home or building can result in a significant indoor air quality problem. Any species of black mold poses a potential health threat to the building’s occupants. Many mold problems originate in the HVAC ductwork where there is an ideal environment for mold propagation.

As mold breaks down different materials to obtain nutrients, the byproducts include volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). While the mold continues to grow, spores are released to establish new colonies. The combination of VOC’s and mold spores in the air stream triggers allergic reactions in people with sensitivities. There are a variety of health issues associated with mold contact including skin rashes, lesions and even invasive disease.

Moisture and Ductwork

Uninsulated duct systems often create condensation issues that result in moisture on the interior surface of the bare sheet metal. Even internally insulated ductwork can experience mold growth if the system is improperly sized. Anywhere there is a source of moisture, mold will begin to grow.

Most heating and air conditioning systems include a blower to distribute conditioned air throughout the building. When mold is present in the ductwork system, the fan also pushes spores and VOC’s into every sub domain in the structure. As a result, addressing mold growth in a duct system is a primary remediation objective.

Cleaning and Prevention

Many water, mold and fire restoration companies specialize in removing mold colonies and installing preventative measures to eliminate future growth. In any remediation operation, the source of the moisture in the duct system must be isolated and eliminated.

Professional cleaning of the ductwork includes using disinfectants to kill existing mold colonies. A variety of different technology is employed to thoroughly clean the ductwork such as compressed air washing, HEPA filtration and manual scrubbing.

To prevent the reestablishment of mold in the ductwork, a strategy of filtration and eradication is most often employed. This usually includes HEPA filtration or electronic air cleaners installed directly in the air stream. Other devices such as UV lamps and ozone generators will prevent colonies from recurring and ensure that the home or business will remain mold free.
