Air Purifying in Offices

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Ozone, a gas composed of three oxygen atoms bonded together, has been protecting us from harmful ultraviolet light generated by the sun for the last 600 million years. Indeed, the human-generated holes in the stratospheric ozone layer are a leading concern for the EPA, which has banned substances and adopted the Montreal Protocol to protect what is left of the ozone layer. The goal of this treaty is to, in time, restore the protective layer of ozone in the atmosphere; the holes are even now showing signs of closure, though it will take years to complete the restoration.

Not all Ozone is good, though. Ground level ozone, when combined with volatile organic compounds, such as those found in gasoline and paints, and nitrogen oxides released through the burning of fossil fuels creates smog, a pollutant known to cause serious health problems. As smog levels rise in cities across the world, hospitals are seeing increased complaints of lung irritation, wheezing, coughing, and painful breathing, all symptoms directly related to the inhalation of ozone and smog. The Great Smog of 1952 killed, directly or indirectly, over 11,000 Londoners. This lead to Parliament’s passage of Clean Air Act is to reduce pollution, making London’s famous “pea soupers” a thing of the past.

While great strides have been made to protect the public from ground level ozone and smog, more needs to be done. Indoor exposure to ozone gas can, according to the EPA, reach 100 times outdoor levels. New studies show, too, that chemical compounds on a person’s skin can react with ozone in the atmosphere around it, releasing chemical byproducts that may be harmful to humans. In an office environment this is an especially pressing concern, as a major source of ozone is office equipment running on electrical or chemical processes, such as copiers and laser printers.

There are, though, ways to reduce office ozone levels; some business machines can be equipped with ozone filters to reduce the levels of gas emitted, and services exist to purify the air in businesses currently experiencing problems. Investing in one of these options is a great way to ensure a healthy, productive workforce for the future.

Fradulent Inspectors

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Are you worried about the damage mold may be doing to your home? After a major flood, a home that had flood water come in has a large chance of experiencing significant and dangerous mold damage. The fumes from this mold can put entire families in jeopardy, as well as driving down home values and leaving residents displaced. When looking for a professional to inspect your home for mold, it is absolutely essential to research the business you are preparing to work with.

After the flooding, local news station WLKY uses the article located at http://www.wlky.com/news/20402064/detail.html to talk about problems with mold issues leading to a large upswing in fraudulent mold inspectors. These predators take advantage of Kentucky’s lack of licensing requirements for mold inspection contractors to prey on unsuspecting home owners by claiming to do thorough inspections they do not have the skills to perform. Unfortunately, there is no immediate way for a homeowner to know a good inspector from a fraud without doing the right research in advance.

To make sure the mold inspection service you are planning to hire is legitimate; a good first resource is the Better Business Bureau. This service allows customers to file a complaint against a business they have trouble with and makes these complaints public; giving you a warning if other people have had trouble with a mold inspection or restoration service before you hire them to deal with your mold issue. Because Kentucky doesn’t have a licensing requirement for mold services, the BBB is your best defense against fraudulent inspectors.

By using the Better Business Bureau to check for fraudulent companies, you can protect yourself from hiring a mold inspection and restoration service that may fail to completely find or remove mold from your home and leave your family in danger. Super Restoration has a solid track record of customer satisfaction in the BBB database that can be found at http://www.seflorida.bbb.org/Business-Report/Super-Restoration-Service-Co-34001939, should be your first stop for proper and safe mold inspection and removal.

Flood or Fire Emergency: Who should I call?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

When an emergency strikes, whether water or fire related, you need to know who to call. Your property is not only an investment but a place where you live or work at every day. A person must feel comfortable with the contractor he or she is choosing will do the right job and complete it in a professional manner.

Thankfully the restoration industry has made some very favorable advancements in recent years allowing companies to become certified. Certification boards include the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and the IAQA (indoor Air Quality Association). These certifications have created and printed industry practices approved by experts in the restoration field. These certifications teach assessment, procedures and quality workmanship while being held to a code of ethics.

Rule # 1 – Choose an IICRC certified firm with WRT certifications

Tools are to a restoration company as water are to fish. An emergency provider must be equipped with tools such as infrared thermal imaging cameras for proper identification of hidden moisture, moisture meters for detection of wet materials, digital cameras for proper insurance claim documentation and more. It Is important to contract a company who can accommodate your needs and be prepared for anything they may run into when they arrive at your property.

Rule # 2 – Check references

Licenses and Insurance are a very easy way to establish a company’s reputability. A company should carry with them a copy of their license and insurance to be available upon request. Make sure to ask for these prior to beginning any work. If a company is under insured you may have to assume the entire liability in case of a loss. Do not let an emergency become a big disaster. Insurances required include general liability, automobile liability, worker compensation and pollution liability. Do your homework?

Rule # 3 – Due diligence will save you later!

In any case, a water or fire damage can be devastating and choosing the prepared and qualified restoration company can make the difference when trying to recover from a loss. Be prepared.

Pipe Leak Emergency

Friday, December 4th, 2009

There are times when water damage seems to sneak up out of nowhere. A few weeks ago, a man calls our emergency line and he is frantic. It seemed as though a pipe started leaking under his kitchen sink a couple hours before he got home, so he walked right in to a watery mess. Although this type of issue can be devastating for anyone, his house was filled with priceless antiques and many were located in the basement right below the leak.

We understand how some situations can take priority over others and in this case, there were no other urgent jobs in that needed to be done. Super Restorations team rushed to the man’s house and we arrived in less than thirty minutes after we were notified of the emergency. We quickly assessed the situation and let me tell you: water was everywhere. Luckily, not much liquid had fully penetrated the floor, so his basement antiques were safe for the time being.

s6301026After making sure that the situation was not going to get any worse, we brought in all of our water extraction equipment. We took apart part of the floor and started removing the water that had seeped through to the roof of the basement. Super Restoration operates heavy-duty drying equipment, so we immediately got to work drying every moist area in the kitchen and below. After the urgency of this problem was diffused, we told the man that he had made a great decision by calling as soon as he noticed the problem.

Water damage gets progressively more severe for every second it is not taken care of and for every day that water is left unattended in the home, the cost to fix the mess increases by thousands of dollars. We kept our equipment in this man’s house for five days in order to do a thorough job and by the time we left, it was as if nothing had ever happened – he did not even have to discard one, single possession.

Be sure to give Super Restoration a call the moment you notice water in a place where it shouldn’t be so that we can immediately begin to mitigate the problem. If a property is insured, we can often begin working before receiving any type of payment. We will work closely with an insurance company while returning your property to its pre-loss state of condition. In fact, Super Restoration is an approved vendor for almost every insurance company in the country.

Fire Damage call

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Recently we were able to help a local condominium association with these very problems. Perhaps taking a look at the situation we were presented with and how we handled it can better describe the services we perform and how well we know their job, and what needs to be done in these types of situations.

At 11AM we received an emergency call from the property manager of the condo association advising they had just been the victims of a fire. The fire had spread to the ball room, hallways, and kitchen. An emergency service crew was disbursed to the scene, and by the time they arrived the local fire department was able to take control of the fire and put it out before it could spread any further.

With the knowledge that the damage a fire causes is threefold, which includes burn, smoke and soot damage, as well as knowing that the odor caused by this damage is a problem as well, our crew went right to work. The first step was for them to remove all burnt content and structural materials, documenting the materials that were discarded as well. We then moved on to cleaning and salvaging whatever walls, ceilings, cabinets, floors, and other contents remained. Although smoke and soot removal is a tedious task, the professionals at Super Restoration have the knowledge required to know what cleaning techniques to use for various surfaces and materials, as well as how to handle delicate items and what chemicals to use.

firedamage-blogMitigation efforts take a few days, and as part of these duties we installed ozone generators which help remove odors caused by the fire, and also used what is called thermo-fog techniques, in conjunction with odor killing chemicals, to combat odor from any non-accessible areas.

This is only one example of how Super Restoration has the knowledge and personnel to deal with an emergency situation. To others, it may just be a job. To the people at Super Restoration, it’s more like a way of life.

Super Restoration provides many services. We provide water damage services, such as water extraction, structural drying, and storm response services. We also deal with mold, providing mold remediation as well as mold inspection services. Other services offered by Super Restoration include document restoration, carpet and upholstery cleaning, reconstruction, portable air conditioning, infrared thermal imaging, emergency power, and pack outs, which can move your possessions to our warehouse for storage and restoration.

The Importants Of Structural Drying After A Flood

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Super Restoration offers South Florida the fastest and most thorough structural drying. Structural drying is necessary after any water intrusion, whether it be from a burst pipe or a hurricane. By quick and effective action, Super Restoration can save your home from more damage.

There are many way that water can get into your home. South Florida is certainly no stranger to strong storms and rapid flooding. Also, poor workmanship and failing equipment can cause appliances and fixtures in you home to leak water. However the water gets in, it is vital to act quickly to stop the leak and dry the area out.

Structural Drying is very important because more damage can be caused by water after it has gotten into your home. If the water is not removed quickly and the area dried, there can be mold growth, rot, and bad smells. Even if the water appear only to be on the floor, the walls can quickly wick it up, and this leads to structural damage.

Super Restoration has a time tested method of dealing with water intrusion. Infrared imaging cameras can read temperature changes in the area, and this, in turn, can reveal where the water is. Infrared imaging can also detect leaks that are invisible to the human eye. When evaluated by experts, infrared imaging is a powerful tool to find water problems in your structure.

After location and evaluating the water damage on your structure, Super Restoration quickly begins the drying process. Of course, the first step is to stop the leaks that were found. Then, using dryers, fans, and dehumidifiers, the next step is to get the water to evaporate as quickly as possible.

If there is water intrusion into the walls, demolition might be necessary. The baseboard will possibly need to be removed to get air flow into the edges of the room. If any insulation has gotten wet, this will have to be taken out. Thus, the walls might be cut open for air movement or repair of the interior. The wall will be repaired and repainted after the area is dried out.

Your insurance company may or may not cover your water damage–it will depend on your policy. However, Super Restoration has plenty of experience dealing with insurance companies and will provide detailed reports for insurance claims. If faulty workmanship is to blame, these reports will clearly reveal the necessary details for litigation. The complete written report will include digital photos and the moisture readings from the equipment.

Super Restoration is the best fire and water restoration company in south Florida. With 20 years experience, we know all of the methods necessary to make your home or business dry in the shortest time possible. We are available 24 hours a day because we know how vital it is to stop and dry a leak as soon as possible.

If you experience water intrusion from a leak or flooding, call Super Restoration immediately. We can help you get your life back to normal fast.

FIRE DAMAGE – THE IMPORTANCE OF SMOKE AND SOOT REMOVAL

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The devastating affects of a fire can linger on as residual smoke and soot continue to damage a home or business. Even if the physical damage is minor, smoke and soot damage can render the property uninhabitable. Smoke and soot not only cause odor, but they can fill the air with small particles making it difficult and dangerous to breathe. They will also travel and penetrate other rooms affecting paint, drywall, carpet, upholstery, clothing and any other personal belongings. They may even react with metal components of the house such as wiring or steel supports causing damage requiring extensive repair for many years after the fire.

It is critical to have professionally trained technicians at the location of the fire as soon as possible for several reasons. Initially, the technicians will assess the damage. Understanding the type of smoke and how it travels is an important step in the restoration process. Knowing the type of fire also helps determine the best process to restore your home or business. Determining the extent of the damage as well as the best methods for restoration is a careful process. Improper clean up can cause permanent staining and greater damage to the property. Carefully trained technicians will also consider all options for physical repair of the property when choosing the most ideal restoration method.

Two Types of Fire:

Simple – fueled by pure fuels, generally result in complete combustion.
Complex – most common in house fires, fueled by synthetic materials in carpets, furniture, wiring, etc. generally resulting in incomplete combustion and the cause of soot.

How Smoke Travels:

Smoke will move to cooler areas and rises to the upper levels of a structure.
Smoke will flow through plumbing systems, using holes around the pipes to move from one floor to another.

Types of Smoke and Soot:

Dry – burns quickly and at high temperatures.
Wet – smolders and burns at low temperatures, pungent odor, sticky.
Protein – practically invisible, will discolor paint and varnish, has a very pungent odor.
Fuel Oil Soot – caused by furnace puff backs.
Other – tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

Super Restoration has served the South Florida area for 25 years using specialized techniques and equipment for smoke and soot mitigation. We pride ourselves in our unique ability to act quickly and thoroughly to restore your home or business to a clean and safe environment. A Dreadful Return From Vacation

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Anything can happen, and every eventuality must be prepared for. That’s what one elderly couple found out when they left their home for a vacation, and accidentally left a faucet running in their guest bathroom. It’s amazing how a small little mistake like this can lead to absolute disaster.

The family had cleaned their home very carefully before leaving, and they thought they had taken care of everything. They left for the Mediterranean, enjoying the sun and sand for about 3 weeks, when a call came in from one of their neighbors. The nearby resident had noticed water coming out from under the front door. When the couple heard this, their heart’s sank. When they got home, they found that the walls and ceilings were covered with visible mold. There was a terrible smell all through the house and they wondered if they would ever be able to live there again.

mold-inspections-276They were on the verge of giving up hope, when they called us here at Super Restoration. After a short talk, it became clear to us that we would be able to help. The kind of mold problems they were dealing with is one of the areas were we have a lot of expertise. Any time there is significant water damage, you can expect mold problems to develop. You need the right of practical know-how, along with the best technology available, to return a home to it’s former condition. We sent one of our certified mold inspectors down to the property to examine everything and make sure it was salvageable, then we went to work.

We sent in a crew of mold removal experts to clean the property. First we got rid of the obvious areas of visible mold, and then we were able to find the hidden mold. Sometimes a person will think their house is mold free, only to discover that hidden mold is eating away in places they can’t see. Finding that mold is a very important part of our job.
The cleaning process was difficult, but once we were finished, the home was returned all the way back to it’s former glory. There was no evidence left that any water damage ever happened. The couple were amazed that we were able to make things right again in such a short amount of time, and for such a great price.

That’s the sort of work that we do everyday here at Super Restoration. No matter what kind of property damage you’ve suffered, we can provide a simple economic solution. Accidents happen, and when they do, you need an expert that knows how to roll back the clock, and make your home like new again. Super Restoration Saves the Day for a Young Family

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

It was a young family’s worst nightmare.

After buying their first home, they decided they wanted to update their roof. They picked out a roofer, and he started the project. Unfortunately, one day, the roofer they trusted forgot to cover the home’s open areas with tarp, and when a rainstorm passed by that afternoon, their living areas were flooded.

The family didn’t get home until 8 PM that night. As soon as they saw what happened, they called Super Restoration’s emergency service crew to assess the damage. Since we accept calls 24 hours and day, seven days a week, we got their call and arrived by 8:30 PM. Then, we got straight to work.

s6300045 We started by putting up tarps to make sure no more damage would occur if another storm came around. We used the highest powered truck-mounted extraction equipment to remove most of the standing water. Next, we set up and installed drying equipment to dry the family’s walls, carpets, furniture, trusses, etc.

Many homeowners remove standing water on their own and believe that they have taken all the proper precautions because the area looks dry or feels dry to the touch. This family made the right decision by calling our professionals to take care of this process for them. To ensure that we protected the home and the family from the future growth of dangerous mold, we set up Infrared cameras to be used and monitored daily by our project manager. These check moisture levels and find other areas with trapped moisture. By dehumidifying the area, we ensured that there would be no “secondary” damage to woodwork or other items in the house.

We worked directly with the customer’s insurance company and made the process as easy as possible. By providing accurate and scientific documentation such as moisture readings, digital photos, infrared images, and a complete written report of all activities, we can depict cause and origin. This helps defend charge backs to the subcontractors or suppliers with a level of confidence that only Super Restoration can provide.

In four days, the job was complete and the family was able to continue to finish their roof.

Everyday, Super Restoration helps in situations just like this. If you live in South Florida, you know that flooding can happen seemingly out of nowhere, especially in flood prone areas of Miami, Broward and Monroe County. When your home or business is flooded, time is critical, every second matters, and structural drying is the key to the survival of your structure. We are happy to provide 24 hour service to ensure that your assets are protected even when everyone else is off duty.

Infrared Thermal Imaging by Super Restoration

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Southern Florida is known for its rain, storms and humidity. Many homes and businesses have moisture leaks that could potentially result in property structural damage. It is important to quickly find these moisture leaks before they cause a large amount of damage that can be very expensive to repair. These leaks can additionally be hazardous to the people who reside in the home or work in the business as mold and mildew grow on moist or damp materials.

Infrared thermal imaging
uses thermal imaging cameras that detect infrared waves and compose pictures of the difference in temperature around the room. These images are immediately produced on the camera so the inspector can take pictures of the leaks accordingly. The temperature differences shown on the camera are caused by many attributes, including evaporation and radiation. This noninvasive method is capable of detecting these moisture leaks in any type of building. These images can effectively identify which building materials have been damaged due to these leaks, as well as showing how far the water has advanced in to the building.

These temperatures are then evaluated by experts to find out where the moisture is entering the building. Once the experts know exactly where the leaks are located, they take electronic moisture detection data to verify their findings. In some instances, they may take core samples as data. Core samples usually come from flat roofs. Using all of this information, they can then make a knowledgeable decision on the approach of stopping these leaks. This commonly minimizes the amount of days it takes to dry the home or business. By using the infrared thermal imaging method, Super Restoration can quickly find and stop any moisture leaks, including the ones invisible to a human eye.

Super Restoration has experienced inspectors can find moisture leaks that cannot be seen without proper equipment by using infrared thermal imaging. Our staff is qualified and skilled to interpret the imaging and assess the potential moisture by evaluating the differences in temperature. By being able to locate all the problem areas in the location, the number of days it take to dry the location is reduced.
